Information for Presenters

Conference dates:
May 27-30, 2008

Location:
Keystone Resort and Conference Center, Keystone, CO

Workshop length:
90 minutes

Workshop size:
40 - 60 people

Audiovisual:
A full range of audiovisual equipment will be available. Laptop computers will not be provided.

Expenses and honoraria:
Presenters will receive complimentary conference registration plus travel-related expenses and lodging, if they live outside the Keystone area. Honoraria may be provided at the discretion of the conference planning committee.

Submission Deadline:
3 p.m. (MST) on November 16, 2007.


About the Audience

The majority of participants will be employees of the Colorado Department of Human Services Division of Child Welfare and its county departments of social services and human services. They will include caseworkers, supervisors, and administrators who are responsible for child protection, foster care, and adoption.

Other participants will include the following:

  • Judges who hear child and family cases
  • Attorneys who represent children, parents or the agency
  • Foster parents
  • Administrators
  • Representatives of agencies that work with substance abuse, juvenile corrections and mental health services

Working with Adolescents - Aging out of the system, education, success stories, youth panels

Working in the Judicial System - Youth having a voice in court – models that are working, foster parent involvement, Adams County model court, how to be a good witness, strategic planning and collaboration.

Children and Families - Domestic violence, fatherhood, sexual abuse, housing issues.

Substance Abuse - Treatment of meth families

Foster Care and Adoption - SB Taskforce, adoption subsidies, post-adoptive services, kinship care, foster to adoption.

Collaboration - between child welfare, juvenile justice programs, foster parents and other stakeholders.

Mental Health Issues - PTSD in troops returning home, domestic violence, early adolescent and early childhood brain development, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, media’s effect on the brain, autism spectrum, trauma.

Cultural Issues - Minority overrepresentation, disparity of services, termination of undocumented parents’ rights, working with the Department of Families in Mexico.

Practice and Policy - CFSR report, quality visitation, stability in care, ICWA

Workplace issues - Managing stress, personal health, leadership, supervisor training, prioritizing responsibilities, basic management skills for new managers.
